The Elephants of the Leuser Ecosystem are in crisis. When charismatic mega-fauna populations are declining at such a rapid rate it sounds the alarm for a much more serious issue.

There is currently a collaborative effort by many NGO’s to ensure the long term protection of this region, supported by a movement of international awareness after the recent visit of Leonardo DiCaprio. His Foundation is supporting our local partners in Sumatra, to establish a Mega-Fauna Sanctuary in the Leuser Ecosystem.
While the Sanctuary is being established, we have partnered with Forest, Nature and Environment Aceh (HAkA) to create Elephant Patrols to identify, name and shadow the remaining Sumatran elephant herds within the Leuser Ecosystem. We will also be outfitting at least 1 elephant within each herd with a GPS collar.
An escalating poaching crisis, and worsening human-elephant conflict has made this absolutely necessary. We simply cannot afford to lose any more of these critically-endangered animals.
These patrols will mean that the elephants can be immediately protected from poaching, until such time as sanctuaries are established and broad-scale protection mechanisms are in place and enforced.
We cannot turn back the clock once they are all gone.
