Racing Extinction in the Leuser Ecosystem

Racing Extinction in the Leuser Ecosystem is a bold mission to shine a global spotlight on the destruction of the last place on Earth where orangutans, rhinos, tigers, and elephants still live together in the wild, and produce the tools that will enable action to save it.

As man-made wildfires dubbed “the biggest environmental crime of the 21st century” (1) tear through Indonesia, they continue to destroy some of the world’s most biodiverse forests and pour millions of tonnes of carbon pollution into our atmosphere. Wildlife Asia is teaming up with Racing Extinction, Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS) and Rainforest Action Network (RAN) to launch Racing Extinction in the Leuser Ecosystem, a bold mission to shine a global spotlight on the destruction of the last place on Earth where orangutans, rhinos, tigers, and elephants still live together in the wild, and produce the tools that will enable action to save it.

The Leuser Ecosystem is a global priority for tropical forest protection. Stretching over 6.5 million acres, the Leuser Ecosystem is a vast, teeming, ancient landscape on the island of Sumatra and considered to be one of the most important forests left in Southeast Asia. But this priceless ecosystem is under assault right now by Conflict Palm Oil. The most widely used vegetable oil in the world, palm oil can be found in over half of all packaged goods in a local supermarket. The blind growth in demand for palm oil has recklessly pushed massive, industrial-scale plantations into the heart of Indonesia’s rainforests, including the Leuser Ecosystem.

Public outcry has convinced many of the world’s biggest companies to commit to cut Conflict Palm Oil, but the fact is these paper promises alone will not stop the imminent threat of extinction eating away at the Leuser Ecosystem. We are in a race against time, but together we will turn this around. By naming names and exposing the actors destroying the #LastPlaceOnEarth, we will hold corporations accountable for their actions, inspire the world to take action to #CutConflictPalmOil and protect the Leuser Ecosystem for generations to come.

We have a plan. Right now there is a diverse team comprised of the world’s most talented investigators, communicators, videographers and corporate campaigners ready to go undercover and expose the culprits driving extinction in the Leuser Ecosystem. We can’t do this alone. We need to you to have our back.

With your help we have already raised $50,000—the funds needed to buy the equipment  to go undercover and find the culprits on the frontlines of forest destruction. The team will follow the supply chain so that we can expose the connections between this destruction and the irresponsible practices of brands that use Conflict Palm Oil in their products stocked in our supermarkets. We will bring the fight to protect the Leuser Ecosystem to the global stage, and with your help we will stop extinction in its tracks. With your help, we will WIN.

Join us now as this story unfolds, sign up for our newsletter, like us on facebook, tell your friends about Racing Extinction in the Leuser Ecosystem and dig deep to give as much as you can give to this critical mission, every dollar counts.

Our team is now in the field conducting their first mission. Ongoing funding support is required to increase global action against Conflict Palm Oil as we fight to promote, protect and restore the Leuser Ecosystem.

The threats are real and the stakes couldn’t be higher, and we can’t turn this around without your help.
